I'm also an organismal zoologist kind of guy, but I tend to gravitate towards cellular rather than ecological phenomena. I've also gone through something similar to your move: we spent almost a year with the wife in Pennsylvania and me and the kids in Minnesota during the difficult transition from one academic job to another.
